Handler's Notes

Minimize Print

Snooty, as a mature adult male manatee, is eating about eight percent of his body weight or about 80 pounds of greens a day. Snooty’s tank mates, Baby Sister and Baby Coral are growing girls – their metabolisms are faster, so they require more food. They are each at about 100 pounds of food each day.  That’s almost 400 pounds of food every day to keep each manatee full. It takes a manatee handler village to take care of a village of manatees.

The staff at Parker Manatee Aquarium include Sally, Eileen, Caitlin, and Sarah, who work tirelessly to keep our manatees well fed. Scott and Bill keep the life support system in peak condition. Thanks to each of them.

Handler's Notes Addendum

The handlers at Parker Aquarium have a FWish List.

Keeping the tank clean is a constant process. You can assist the crew in upgrading their dive gear by helping them purchase new skins, wet suits, regulators, masks and fins.

We would also like for the aquarium to reflect all the aquatic and marine areas around Florida. We will be testing new exhibit ideas. We are looking for people who would like to contribute toward the purchase of tanks and filtration.

Please contact Marilyn Margold, 941-746-4131 extension 20 for more information.
