The South Florida Museum announces its Summer 2010 Science Camps.
Summer 2010 promises to be another terrific camp year here at the South Florida Museum, with new science camps to spark the educational imagination. Here's this summer's line-up:
June 14-18
FOSSILS AND DINOSAURS
What can we learn from Earth's ancient
Inhabitants? What do fossils and the study of dinosaurs tell us about the early earth? Find out as we explore fossils found in Florida and around the world, and as we encounter many types of dinosaurs and flying and swimming reptiles. Hands on exploration about the exciting science of paleontology.
June 21-25
SPACE & THE PHYSICS OF FLIGHT
Pitch.....Thrust.....Roll! These are terms used every day at space flight centers around the world. How do we improve space flight and what designs might we see for vehicles future space travel? Explore space, the universe, the physics of flight, rockets, shuttles, airplanes, kites, and even birds, and apply all we know to understanding and designing space vehicles of the future.
June 28-July 2
MANATEES AND THEIR HABITAT
Students will embark on a learning adventure about manatees, their physiology, habits, habitats and environmental concerns that endanger these docile mammals. Observe Snooty and his tank mates to learn natural and learned behaviors and habits. Students will become future advocates on behalf of our state's manatee population!
July 5 - July 9 NO CAMP/July 4th Break Week

CSI FORENSICS for KIDS
CSI Forensics is NOT just a TV show! Students will learn the pathology, biology, chemistry and
entomology of forensic study. Students will gain a basic understanding of how forensics helps law enforcement professionals solve crimes on a daily basis. Dissections, DNA, fingerprinting, evidence collection and many other areas of forensic science will be explored. How do the forensic professionals help solve crimes? Learn the science behind the shows!!!
July 19 - July 23
YOUNG SCIENTISTS 2
Become a 'scientist" by experimenting, investigating and exploring the world around us. Apply your skills in the lab and in the field. Learn the scientific method, experiments in many areas including, but no limited to, chemistry, geology, electricity and many others. Enjoy "learning by doing". Remember PARTICIPATION EXPECTED AND FUN!
July 26- July 30
MARINE BIOLOGY & OCEANOGRAPHY
Learn and study Florida's marine topography, the many fishes, mammals and crustaceans, reefs and reef structures, marine plants and the science underneath the ocean. Possible field trips in the planning stage along coastal areas. This class is a MUST for any student who loves our beaches, coastal areas, and waters!
August 2, 3, 4
3-Day BRAINETICS MATH BOOT CAMP
Three day camp exploring the new Brainetics math programs. This new program teaches math in a significantly different way, improving students understanding of math concepts and strategies that will assist them in math skills applications. Learn math in a new way!
Education Director, Jeff Rodgers, will continue to provide his "Science Moments with Mr. Rodgers" during the Summer Camps. Additionally, the instructors will continue to provide quality, hands-on, fun and purposeful educational science instruction that campers can utilize in their science classes at their respective schools. The South Florida Museum camps adhere to the FLDOE Science benchmark "Big Ideas" and use of the Manatee County Schools Science Curriculum Maps for appropriate age level instruction.
