The Institute for Science Teaching offers a series of professional development programs for educators who want to enhance their understanding of content, broaden their repertoire of teaching methods, and (re)kindle their enthusiasm for science. Three programs are currently being offered:
IST-1 covers… everything. Using A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson as the institute text, IST-1 combines assigned readings, lecture/discussion sessions and laboratory trials of hands-on learning activities to explore how we know what we know about Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, Earth Systems Science, Chemistry, Biology and Environmental Science.
IST-2 focuses primarily on Earth, Space and Life Science. Using the theme Thinking About Life in the Universe to launch into a detailed exploration of Earth as a habitable planet, and how what we know about life on our planet informs our search for life elsewhere in the universe. Completion of IST-1 is encouraged, but not a prerequisite, before taking IST-2.
IST-3 Understanding Evolution focuses on Life and Environmental science and the Nature of Science. We'll be looking at Life - What is it? How did it get started? What drives its evolution? How do we learn about it? Through readings, discussions and lab activities, this institute is designed primarily to increase your content knowledge as an adult learner. All grade levels are encouraged to participate.
Manatee County School District teachers receive a stipend for completion of IST programs. Institutes are limited to 25 teachers per session. Grade level teams are encouraged to participate as a team.
